What I’d Tell My Younger Self: Women in Construction Week 2026

WIC 2026 Calibro Workspace

This week, from 2nd to 8th March, marks Women in Construction Week, a time to recognise, celebrate and champion the women shaping our built environment. It is a moment to spotlight the talent, resilience and leadership of women across every corner of the industry, from site to studio, finance to marketing.

The construction industry has made progress, but there is still work to do. In Ireland, women account for approximately 10 to 12 percent of the workforce in construction. While these numbers are gradually increasing, representation, particularly in leadership and site-based roles, remains an ongoing focus.

This week also leads us to International Women’s Day on 8th March, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Together, these moments provide an opportunity not just to reflect on progress, but to share real stories from the women driving our industry forward every day.

To celebrate, we asked some of our team to reflect on their younger selves, what they would say to them, whether they ever imagined a career in construction, and what advice they would give to young girls today.

Cara Calibro Workspace WIC

Cara – Project Manager

Construction was not an obvious path growing up. Like many girls, Cara was not shown project management or site leadership as a career option. Stepping into the industry changed that perspective.

From managing day to day site operations to overseeing projects through to completion, her career has been shaped by resilience and steady growth. Construction is more than bricks and beams. It is collaboration, leadership and seeing ideas become reality.

To her younger self she would say, ask the questions, take up space and stay curious. Confidence comes with experience. Her message to young girls is simple. You are stronger than you think and your voice belongs in every room you walk into.

Ruth Calibro Workspace WIC

Ruth – Site Manager

Ruth did not begin her career in construction. She started as a qualified teacher but soon realised that organising chaos, managing big personalities and breaking down complex information were skills suited to life on site. Swapping lesson plans for programmes and drawings, she found satisfaction in seeing tangible results from her work.

If she could speak to her younger self, she would say master the “construction no”. Do not soften authority with apologies. Be clear, calm and direct. She believes in being visible. Do not stay in the site office. Walk the floors, engage with the trades and build credibility through presence.

Her advice to young girls is simple. Do not wait for permission to speak. Preparation is your credibility.

Michelle Calibro Workspace WIC

Michelle – Senior Interior Designer

Michelle once imagined becoming a fine artist. Over time, that instinct evolved into spatial design, and she realised she had not abandoned art at all. Her canvas had simply expanded.

In an industry that can feel trend driven and competitive, she has learned that her perspective, shaped by her culture, childhood and lived experience, is her strength. No one else can design from her lens.

If she could speak to her younger self, she would say be bold, be brave and do not dilute your style to fit in.

Her advice to young girls entering construction is clear. You are not lucky to be here. You belong here and you are a professional.

Sarah Calibro Workspace WIC

Sarah – Marketing Manager

Construction was not originally on Sarah’s radar, but marketing is about people, purpose and storytelling, skills that can be applied in any industry. Being involved in projects from concept through to completion, and visiting site along the way, has become one of her favourite parts of the role.

Looking back, she would remind her younger self not to measure progress against anyone else. The side projects, time abroad and unconventional career moves were not distractions. They were building resilience and perspective.

Her advice to young girls is not to rush to fit someone else’s definition of success. Trust your instincts, build the skills that interest you and remember that progress does not have to be linear to be meaningful.

Wendy Calibro Workspace WIC

Wendy – Finance Manager

Wendy did not set out to work in construction, but over time she has built strong industry knowledge and found genuine enjoyment in the sector. Her career reflects steady commitment and a strong work ethic.

If she could offer advice to her younger self, it would be to work hard and make yourself invaluable. Consistency and dedication create opportunity.

To young girls considering their future, her message is straightforward. Go for the role you are passionate about. You can achieve what you set your mind to.

Women in Construction Week and International Women’s Day give us the opportunity to focus on the people behind the progress. They shine a light on the journeys, experiences and individual stories that continue to shape our industry.

They are about the girl who once imagined being an artist and now designs workplaces.
The teacher who swapped classrooms for construction sites.
The young professional who was not shown this path but carved it for herself anyway.
The finance leader who built her expertise steadily over time.

This week, we celebrate the women in our team and the many women across the industry who show up, speak up and build spaces that shape how we live and work. And to every young girl looking at a hard hat, a drawing board, a spreadsheet or a site plan, remember that this industry is one where you belong.
