The Apprentice – What if Lord Sugar’s Boardroom was warm and inviting?

Calibro Workspace Fictitious Redesign of The Apprentice Boardroom and Reception

Now on its eighteenth season, The Apprentice is one of the most highly recognisable reality game shows in the UK. With the latest season of the well-loved show gracing our screens, we began wondering – how would The Apprentice experience change for candidates if Lord Sugar’s boardroom was warm and inviting?

As experts in workplace design, we thought a great way to flex our creative muscles would be to redesign The Apprentice’s boardroom and reception area.

We became our own client, creating the brief and rolling out the design to have some fun and show you that how your office looks and feels like really matters. This was an opportunity to bring together our marketing and design teams to refresh a space we all know and love, while continuing to align with The Apprentice brand – so let’s talk about how we did it.

The Brief

  • Elevate the experience – create a warm, welcoming space for the contestants that aligns with ‘The Apprentice’ brand and reflects today’s workplace
  • Bring the outside in through biophilia, lighting and sustainable elements
  • Modernise technology to reflect new ways of working – hybrid

Key Considerations

  • How to bring light into a windowless space
  • Must be able to function as a television set
  • Locality of the setting

The Boardroom

Natural tones, textures and elements were introduced into the space to provide a sense of grounding and calm, as we seek out settings that bring us closer to nature in an increasingly connected world. The concrete plates from the existing suite were reutilised as a nod to the previous look and feel, with subtle lighting above highlighting the architectural detail and creating a warmer setting.

The frosted façade has been replaced with modern, crittal glazed doors for Lord Sugar to enter through, which create a ‘false’ window effect. These can be backlit to help create the effect of natural sunlight.

The sharp angular forms of the beams and furniture have been replaced with a bespoke, curved table. The same curve is mirrored in the ceiling, with recessed acoustic baffles providing noise-reducing properties for auditory comfort, and LED lighting to create visual interest within the space. The lighting above the boardroom table can be enhanced to ensure good lighting for tv. A light curtain was introduced to again soften the harsh lines, creating a more luxurious feel suited to the central London location. The boardroom scenes typically take 4-5 hours to film, ergonomic chairs were chosen to provide adequate support and comfort for the duration.

In recent years people have become accustomed to working in the comfort of their own homes for at least part of the working week. The bespoke joinery surrounding the boardroom screens brings a more homely, lived-in feel to the setting whilst showcasing some accolades and essential reading for the contestants.

The carbon-neutral gradient carpet was chosen in earth tones for added visual interest and a softer finish.

The Reception Area

The concept carries through to the reception area, with natural tones and soft lighting creating a welcoming environment. Textured flooring and wall finishes along with minimal-style furniture and abstract artwork brings an element of luxuriousness to the space.

Acoustic rafts have been applied to the ceiling to minimise noise transfer between the boardroom and waiting area for the sensitive discussions taking place.

Navy tones replicating the blues of natural dyes have been used along with zoning, again to pay homage to the previous setting but also for it’s wellbeing properties. Blue is shown to reduce heart rates, whilst the clay tones in the boardroom will engage and energise the contestants.

Again, ergonomics have been a key consideration for the Receptionist, with an adjustable monitor arm and suitable task chair, promoting healthy movement throughout the day.

Planting throughout is preserved, providing the look, feel and scent of real plants, without the need for sunlight and watering. This is a sustainable option over imported plastic planting.

The natural woven textiles throughout have been selected both for their aesthetic appeal and sustainable credentials.

The key themes featured in this piece are similar to what we seek to achieve when we work with our clients – addressing key project drivers, use of sustainable materials and products and enhanced wellbeing through people-centric design.
